New substation for electricity outage-affected Richards Bay suburb
The new substation was delivered yesterday afternoon

THE City of uMhlathuze this took delivery of a brand new substation for the Kolstertkring area of Meerensee that has been subjected to a more than 24-hour long power outage, yesterday.
This after the electricity tripped during Monday’s heavy rainfall, plunging Meerensee, Mzingazi, the port and Small Craft Harbour into darkness at around 2pm.
Power was restored to parts of the affected area by 9.30pm Monday night, leaving the area around Kolstertkring without, with estimated time of restoration at 10pm last night.
“It is unfortunate that this area has been affected for such a long time, but considering the fact that the entire mini-substation became dysfunctional, makes one understand that it’s quite a complex installation,” said Ward Councillor Christo Botha.
“It is not something that can be done in half an hour because it feeds quite a big area and the link up must be done correctly.”
Botha said the rain and safety must also be taken into account.
“This is part of a complex electricity network in the city, with about 3 000 mini-substations and 18 substations, and we are doing the best we can given the circumstances. We ask the affected residents for their patience.”
