Transnet cuts volume of trucks calling at Port of Richards Bay

FOLLOWING intensive meetings with the City of uMhlathuze, Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has announced its plan to decrease the number of trucks calling at the Port of Richards Bay.

This after the city saw a massive influx of side-tipper coal trucks lining the N2 and John Ross, wreaking havoc for other road users.

“Although the terminal and all customers made a commitment on Wednesday to reduce the number of trucks arriving at the terminal, the situation worsened thereafter, creating the impression we are not affording this matter the attention and urgency it deserves,” said Transnet in a statement.

The authority said it has committed to reducing the number of trucks calling at the terminal from the current daily average of 900, to 500 for the duration of the festive season.

“[This is] so other road users can freely utilise the road network without truck congestion during the festive season.
“The terminal will only service trucks that are bringing cargo for nominated vessels.”

Transnet urged customers that do not have nominated vessels between 15 December and 5 January, to not send cargo trucks to the Port of Richards Bay.

“The terminal will easily identify customers who disregard this reasonable request, and report them to the city and other customer forums for further action.”
