1. Wear sunscreen
You’ve heard it time and again but it’s a message that needs reiterating. Whether it’s overcast or sunny, get into the habit of applying broad-spectrum sunscreen before heading outside. This should be an SPF 30 or higher with UVA and UVB protection to prevent sunburn and the harmful benefits of this.

2. Reapply, reapply, reapply
Once is never enough with the heat and humidity of Zululand because the sunscreen will eventually wash away. You’ll need to reapply sunscreen every two hours at least, but more if you’re swimming or doing outdoor activities and sweating.

3. Time it carefully
If you’re out between the hours of 10am and 3pm, make sure you’re covered in sunscreen and try to remain in the shade wherever possible. The best way to check is by looking at your shadow – if it’s shorter than you, it’s best to stay out of the sun.

4. Wear light clothing
If you’re in the pool, try wearing some sort of sun protection swimwear if you’re going to be outdoors for a long time. This is especially true for young children who can spend hours in the water. If you’re outside but not in the pool, wear light but protective clothing that covers as much as possible.

5. Hats on
There are lots of fantastic UV-protective sun hats that provide you with ample sun protection during the searing summer heat. However, at the very least you need to wear a peak cap and sunglasses for better eye protection.

6. Drink lots of water
Keep yourself cool and refreshed inside and out by drinking water throughout the day. This is not only important for hydration, water helps to protect your skin from sun damage so aim for around two litres a day in summer.

7. Eat correctly
You can also keep your body hydrated by eating lots of fresh fruit and vegetables. In addition to the water content, they’re also rich in antioxidants that protect your skin from UV rays. Carrots, blueberries and watermelon are great ones to try.

8. Moisturise
Even with all this protection, your skin will require extra nourishment after a day in the summer sun. An aloe vera lotion is a great option as this will soothe any inflammation and prevent further sun damage. Avoid any scrubs or exfoliation.
