Job seekers must stop paying for posts

The Department of Employment and Labour has distanced itself from the ‘Youth Employment Programme’ job scam, saying it has no such programmes.

“Scammers promise to reward participants in the so-called programme with obscene stipends. But before this can occur, a potential participant in the programme has to pay a deposit at one of the retailers and also give personal details,” said Thejane.

Thejane said this latest scam follows a number of others in which members of the public are asked to pay to receive payouts, with the scammers fraudulently using Employment and Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi and the department’s social media accounts to swindle the public.

“The Department of Employment and Labour has a Public Employment Services (PES) branch that assists companies and workers to adjust to changing labour market conditions,” said Thejane.

“PES offers a range of free public employment services. These services range from registering work seekers on

Employment Services of South Africa (ESSA) – an online job matching platform -, employment counseling, and providing subsidies or schemes to NGOs that assist in the employment of people with disabilities. It is illegal in South Africa to be asked to pay for a job,” said Thejane.
