As a cut-off low pressure system makes its way across the country from the west, the SA Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms for the Zululand region.
The warning is valid from 2pm to 11pm today (Wednesday) and is set to affect King Cetshwayo, uMkhanyakude and Zululand districts.
Meanwhile, the Harry Gwala and Ugu districts have been issued with a level 5 severe weather warning.
“Scattered to widespread showers and thunder showers are expected over KZN as a result of a cut-off low pressure system,” said SAWS.
“Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms over the western and southern parts of KZN in the afternoon into the evening.
“These storms are expected to be accompanied by heavy downpours and excessive lightning.”
Impacts could include localised flooding of settlements, low-lying roads and bridges; localised damage to infrastructure; severe lightning potentially leading to localised fires; injuries to people and livestock, and difficult driving conditions.
2022 flooding
It was a cut-off low system that caused last year’s flooding in KZN, which caused much damage to infrastructure, especially roads.
Such damage, including the uMhlali river bridge on the N2, is yet to be repaired.
Motorists are urged to reduce speed, increase following distance and switch on headlights to stay safe on the wet roads.
