Side-tipper truck crashes into house in Pongola

The incident led to residents subsequently stopping trucks and dumping coal across the road to prevent use of that stretch of the highway.

Pongola communities have once again closed the N2 to side-tipper coal trucks after one of these heavy-duty vehicles left the road and crashed into a house.

The incident occurred at Waterbus at about 9am today (Friday), which led to residents subsequently stopping trucks and dumping coal across the road to prevent use of that stretch of the highway.

Details surrounding fatalities or injuries are unknown at this stage, but shortly after the incident, community members were calling for the ‘driver’s blood’.

The Pongola community has been hard hit by tragedy in recent months after a side-tipper coal truck ploughed into a bakkie carrying 20 occupants in September.

Among the dead were 18 children, who were being transported home from school.

The community prevented side-tipper trucks from utilising the N2 through their area for a number of months, reopening it only after intensive discussions with all stakeholders, and the implementation of strict rules.

These included truck drivers slowing down to 40km/h through the affected area, maintaining a certain distance from other vehicles, and not passing other vehicles.
