Concerns over pothole-riddled uMhlathuze roads

Residents say most roads around the city are riddled with potholes and fear these could lead to dangerous sinkholes

City of uMhlathuze residents have expressed major concerns with the countless potholes that have formed on the region’s roads.

The affected areas include the John Ross highway, the main trucking route to the Port of Richards Bay, the CBD, Alton, and parts of eSikhaleni, eNseleni and Empangeni.

According to residents, most roads around the city are riddled with potholes, and they fear these could lead to dangerous sinkholes.

In some areas, the potholes were formed by recent heavy rains, while in other parts the rain reopened those that were previously repaired.

“There are a total of 45 potholes in Kabelkring, Alton alone. The N2 off-ramp towards Brackenham is also waiting for an accident to happen.

“Our road structures are falling apart. Can roadworks do a decent job and not just cover them with plaster?” asked one resident.

“As a matter of fact, there are quite a few humps with holes that have formed just before them.

“[The municipality] should use the technically-correct procedure to repair the potholes to ensure a good adhesion and sealing to the surface, otherwise those holes will just reopen within a few weeks,” the resident added.

The uMhlathuze Municipality said it is, however, determined to timeously repair the damage caused.
