Water released at Pongolapoort dam after heavy rains

The Goedertrouw Dam which supplies Richards Bay, Empangeni and surrounding areas is however unmoved 101.1%

Recent heavy rains have provided a much-needed boost for dam levels in the region, with Pongolapoort dam recording substantial gains.

The dam in Jozini saw an increment from 88,3% last week to 96.3% this week, prompting the KZN Department of Water and Sanitation to release water to ensure that the dam is within the safety operational rule of 85% capacity.

The Goedertrouw Dam which supplies Richards Bay, Empangeni and surrounding areas is however unmoved 101.1%.

“Klipfontein Dam which supplies Vryheid and Ulundi is at 105.4% from 104.5% last week. Hluhluwe dam has dropped to 101.9% this week from 104.0% last week,” said DWS spokesperson Wisane Mavasa.

Mavasa said although the provincial dams are at satisfactory levels, ‘communities are urged to use water sparingly to ensure that there is enough water to last until the difficult dry season’.

“The Department of Water and Sanitation persists in urging residents in low-lying areas and riverbanks to be vigilant since KwaZulu-Natal has become prone to floods in recent times,” said Mavasa.
