WATCH: All systems go for St Lucia soapbox derby

The St Lucia Ratepayers’ Association is putting the ‘fun’ in fundraising as they host a soapbox derby to commemorate Heritage Month and raise funds for the town.
Set to be held on Saturday, 30 September, the St Lucia Heritage ‘da-Car’ event promises to be much fun, and organisers urge interested participants to sign up.
One of the organisers, Fred Stefanini, said it was hoped that entrants would come from both nearby and further afield.
First-, second- and third-place prizes are up for grabs, and there will be betting stations for ‘betting men’, as well as food stalls.
Stefanini said the town’s main road will be closed for three hours to allow for the race.
The event is a fundraiser for the RPA, which has plans to install solar streetlights in St Lucia town, as well as other causes such as helping cancer patients.
“It is just for the town in general, to raise some funds for good causes,” said Stefanini.
Stefanini has just completed his homemade ‘Stefararri’, which will be his race car of choice on the day.
“[The name] is a play on words; my surname and the Ferrari,” chuckled Stefanini.
“Those wanting to enter must know that they don’t have to build something fancy or expensive, just as long as it can roll down the road,” he said.
