Suspects arrested for murder of accomplice

The police conducted a sting operation, which was backed up by intelligence information

The police on Monday arrested two suspects in connection with the murder of their alleged accomplice whom, at this stage, cannot be named.

Mthandeni Khumalo (25) and Nqubeko Nsibande (21) were also charged with unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, and attempted murder.

They were arrested in the Mbazwana area.

“On Friday, 3 November, the police conducted a sting operation, which was backed up by intelligence information, and stopped a suspicious vehicle that had five male occupants,” said SAPS spokesperson Captain Sbusiso Mkhize.

“When the police approached the vehicle, the suspects started shooting towards the officers, who retaliated.

“One suspect was shot and rushed to the hospital but later passed away. Two suspects were arrested, while the other two ran away and are sought by the police.

“Police recovered a pistol, live rounds of ammunition, a suspected stolen vehicle and cellphones,” said Mkhize.

He added that both Khumalo and Nsibande appeared before the Manguzi Magistrate’s Court on Monday.

“The suspects were remanded in custody for a formal bail application.”

They are due to appear in the same court on Thursday.

In a separate incident last Thursday, police in Khula Village near Mtubatuba arrested Sipho Nxumalo for the unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition, after following intelligence information, said Mkhize.

uMkhanyakude District SAPS acting commissioner Brigadier Mandla Mhlongo applauded the arrests and further appreciated the commitment of the police in fighting crime in the district.
