Local ladies learn to bake

The women were taught how to follow recipes, bake and generate funds from their new-found skills.

A group of Dlangezwa women now have the skills to start their own businesses following baking in training at the Linzwa Foundation soup kitchen last week.

Funded by the Department of Social Development, the training was facilitated by Carlos Bakery, and the women were taught how to follow recipes, bake and generate funds from their new-found skills.

“Many women are subjected to emotional and physical abuse because they are financially dependent on their spouses. This course was to change that and give them the skills, not only to find employment but to create their own businesses.

“This will provide a sustainable source of income through selling goods to their local community and becoming financially independent,” said Linzwa Foundation chairperson Lindiwe Dube.

Afikile Zikhali (25), one of the training beneficiaries, told the ZO the programme would assist her to look after her family and start a business.

“It’s such a great thing to learn a skill, especially at my age. I’m unemployed and this will give me an opportunity to bake and sell at schools and in the community,” she said.
