Dolphin camera is back at its post at Alkantstrand
Viewers both local and overseas can scan the water looking for the elusive humpbacks. Here's how...
Following the refurbishment of the lifeguard building at Alkantstrand, the dolphin viewing camera was reinstalled on Friday.
‘McCam’, as the camera which provides live streaming is known, was previously donated by the Natal Sharks Board and has also been upgraded.
By logging on to www.dolphins.org.za viewers both local and overseas can scan the water looking for the elusive humpbacks.
Dolphin movement and behaviour are studied as part of the ongoing Richards Bay endangered humpback dolphin research project.
Heading the study is Dr Shanan Atkins, who travelled down from Jo’burg with IT husband Brett to fit and connect the camera, with a lot of help from their conservation-minded friends.
Xpedite (formally Nerospec) sponsored and organised the network connection, while Talisman Hire kindly supplied the scaffolding and other equipment needed for the installation.
McCam is also a valuable ally for bathers, surfers and anglers who want to check out sea conditions.
While in town, Dr Atkins did a presentation at the Rotary Club of Richards Bay, which is keen to play a part in this important research project under Rotary International’s educational and environmental portfolios.
