WATCH: AEF calls for disbandment of Mtubatuba Municipality

Mtubatuba mayor a no show at African Economic Freedom party's picket outside the municipality

The African Economic Freedom (AEF) party has called for the financially struggling Mtubatuba Municipality to be disbanded.

This as the party, which is led by former EFF KZN secretary Sifiso Mthethwa, picketed outside the municipality’s offices on Friday morning.

The handful of picketers sang party and protest songs outside the municipal gates, waiting to hand over a memorandum of complaints to Mayor Mxolisi Mthethwa.

Municipal law enforcement officers were present, observing from inside the premises, while the mayor, who was scheduled to attend the Mtubatuba Matric Mayoral Awards, was a no show, to the agitation of picketers.

The AEF’s 13-point memorandum focuses on service delivery issues, which party president Mthethwa said include the poor state of roads, unfinished projects, including the Mtuba Sports Complex (formerly Mtuba Rugby Club), on which this publication has reported.

“And we heard that the contractor for that project was not paid,” said the AEF’s Mthethwa, on the Mtuba Sports Complex.

The AEF president accused the current administration of mismanagement and corruption, an accusation he extended to the provincial government, in particular, on the appointment of Dr Siya Ntuli as the ministerial representative (administrator).

Ntuli is the former municipal manager (MM) of Mtubatuba Municipality, an issue that was a bone of contention last year for those at the helm.

“How was the same person who caused this mess appointed to help the municipality?” asked Mthethwa.

He further accused Ntuli of failing to perform his duties as administrator.

Mthethwa said they would cease their picket until they are addressed.
