Former Unizulu student convicted of murder

The former University of Zululand student was convicted and sentenced at the Mtunzini High Court

Mtunzini High Court last Friday convicted a former Unizulu student of murder and sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment.

Nkosikhona Mngadi (20) was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Mngadi, originally from Richmond outside Pietermaritzburg, was found guilty of killing a fellow student at the university premises last June.

The court heard that the deceased, Thulebona Maphumulo (22), originally from Durban, had gone to buy something from the tuck shop and on his way back, he met with Mngadi who demanded his money.

A fight ensued, during which Mngadi pulled out a knife and stabbed Maphumulo several times.

He screamed for help and Mngadi left him and went to his residence.

Maphumulo went to ask for help from the tuck shop owner, who directed him to report the matter to the security control room.

A heavily bleeding Maphumulo rushed to the security guard control room and guards called for back-up from campus security.

Maphumulo succumbed to his injuries and the guards went out to look for Mngadi.

Mngadi was found surrounded by an angry mob of students. The security guards took him to Mtunzini SAPS where he was charged with murder.
