Dangerous prisoners escape from custody in Mtubatuba

Fugitives accused of a variety of serious crimes sought by police in Mtubatuba

Three suspects accused of serious offences escaped from lawful custody at KwaMsane SAPS on Monday night.

According to a police source, awaiting trial prisoners Sanele Gumede, Smangaliso Mpanza and Xolani Mkhize escaped between 6pm on Monday and 6am on Tuesday.

Gumede faces charges of murder, attempted murder and robbery; Mpanza is accused of robbery with aggravating circumstances, and Mkhize faces charges of rape and attempted murder.

uMkhanyakude Cluster spokesperson Captain Justice Hlabisa described the fugitives as extremely dangerous and urged members of the public not to try to apprehend them.

“We seek public assistance. A case of escaping from lawful custody is under investigation. It’s not clear how they escaped from custody. We urge anyone who might have information as to their whereabouts to contact the nearest police station.

“Anyone with information is asked to contact KwaMsane SAPS on 035 5519000 or Colonel Mdletshe on 064 5283369, or Crime Stop on 0860 10111,” said Hlabisa.
