Mtubatuba police urge residents to improve security
Vehicles at risk as upsurge in residential crime plagues parts of Zululand region

The police in Mtubatuba have urged residents to strengthen home security measures in light of a concerning spike in the number of house robberies in the area.
Police spokesperson Captain Justice Hlabisa said in one week earlier this year, five house robberies were reported.
He said in most incidents cars are stolen.
Hlabisa advised local residents to install burglar guards at their homes and, if they can afford to, security cameras.
“Footage from cameras really helps us in our investigations,” said Hlabisa.
He also said the same advice can be applied by small business owners who are prone to falling prey to business robberies.
The police have noted that unfenced homes and those in the rural areas are most vulnerable.
Furthermore, failing to ensure doors are properly locked and windows are securely closed places home dwellers at increased risk.
“This can make a difference because people are being victimised too much,” said Hlabisa.
He further advised residents to be vigilant when driving home, and to call ahead to ensure there are no unknown persons lurking; do not drive directly to the gate, drive past to inspect for any suspicious people, and be observant.
