Strong winds expected along KZN coast

Weather service issues warning for strong, damaging winds

Zululanders are urged to avoid coastal activities tomorrow (Wednesday) amid a weather warning for strong, damaging winds.

The SA Weather Service (SAWS) this morning (Tuesday) issued the warning, in place from midnight tonight until 11pm tomorrow, affecting the KZN coastline from Port Edward in the south to St Lucia in the north.

A surface low is situated to the southeast of the country with a high ridging behind it.

As a result, steep pressure gradients leading to strong southwesterly winds with average speeds of 20 to 30 knots (37 to 55km/h), reaching 35 to 40 knots (64 to 74km/h) can be expected.

Potential impacts include disruption to roads owing to crosswinds and fallen objects; localised disruptions to ports and difficulty in navigating for small vessels; localised damage of temporary structures, and coastal communities affected by spray.

“The public are advised to take the necessary precautions. Drivers to be aware of crosswinds and stronger winds in exposed areas. Boats are recommended to seek shelter, and avoid coastal activities,” said the SAWS.
