We all know that times are getting harder and prices are increasing daily as most South Africans struggle to live within their budgets and battle to stretch what they earn.

While there are ways in which one can live on a set budget, it can be a strain and requires strict planning beforehand.

Here are 5 ways to effectively stay within your budget:

1. Seek help: Whether it is a trusted friend, a family member or even a financial adviser, this can easily assist you to live more frugally and save.

2. Track your money: Keep records of where your money is going for every little transaction or purchase you make; either write them down on a list or keep a digital record.

3. Start saving: Try and keep a change jar or open up a separate savings account where you transfer a set amount each month. This way, you’ll be comfortable in the knowledge that you’re building up a lump sum for a rainy day.

4. Plan your weeks/months: Start by prioritising your financial responsibilities and what needs to be paid first. Write down a list of payments to be made or even check what is not needed and scratch it out to save more efficiently.

5. Check your budget: Download tools or templates to track your budget, or even keep a separate diary or memo pad where you can keep going back to check.
