Durnford road reopening delayed
The Durnford road bridge is now expected to reopen later this week
In a reconstruction job whose completion has been delayed several times over the last five months, the Durnford Road bridge reopening has once again been pushed back.
Motorists swarmed to Durnford Road this morning (Tuesday) in anticipation of the reopening as per last week’s update from workers on site, but found it still closed to traffic.
Contractors are still busy with minor touch-ups and say the opening date is now Thursday, 2 May.
Durnford Road was closed in early December after the third collapse in just a few months. This followed a collapse on Christmas Eve 2021 during heavy rains.
After a public outcry by residents and business owners, the initial six-month repair deadline was reduced to just six weeks, as announced by City of uMhlathuze Deputy Mayor Christo Botha in the run-up to the festive season.
This was later extended, however, with the deadline shifting no fewer than four times since.
