WATCH: Cash-in-transit heist outside Empangeni

Cash vehicle bombed in heist along R34 outside Empangeni

The R34 near Nkwalini is a no-go zone this (Monday) morning after a cash-in-transit (CIT) vehicle was bombed.

The incident occurred near KwaMbhekaphansi just after 9am.

Reports from the scene indicate that the CIT vehicle was gutted during the explosion, and a light motor vehicle also caught on fire.

The number of suspects is at present not clear. It is also unclear as to whether or not the guards were injured during the attack.

According to Emasangeni reserve residents, a loud bang was heard from the vicinity of the incident, which they thought was a truck tyre bursting.

Traffic is blocked in both directions as emergency personnel tend to the scene.

King Cetshwayo Cluster police spokesperson Captain Siyanda Shangase confirmed police are still at the scene.

“At this stage, it is unclear as to how this incident occurred,” he said.
