Weekly dam report for Zululand region

Department of Water and Sanitation urges sparing use of water as KZN heads into dry winter

As we head into the cooler, drier winter months, the Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) urges citizens to continue using water sparingly.

This as the overall storage capacity for the province has decreased fractionally, from last week’s 91.9% to 91.7% this week.

The department said it is working collaboratively with Umgeni-uThukela Water to roll out bulk water infrastructure projects in various parts of the province, especially in water-stressed communities.

It said strides are being made to ensure sustainable and reliable water provision through effective implementation of bulk water infrastructure such as the Maphumulo Bulk Water Supply Scheme, which is set for completion by January 2025 and set to benefit residents within ILembe District Municipality.

“The project, which is implemented in phases, entails the upgrade of the existing 6 megalitres per day (M?/d) water treatment plant capacity to 12 megalitres per day (M?/d).

“The scheme, once all phases are complete, will service Maphumulo, Masibambisane, KwaSizebantu, Ngcebo, Maqumbi, and Ashville,” said the department.

“These areas will also include Emtanjeni, Nyamazane, Balcom, and Sindi in the future.

This week’s dam levels for the Zululand region are: Pongolapoort 86.5%, Hluhluwe 99.2%, Goedertrouw 96.3% and Klipfontein 97.2%.
