Elections 2024: Zululanders make their mark on special voting days

Special voting process runs smoothly in uMlalazi

Thousands of citizens went to the polls this week to cast their special votes at the various polling stations across Zululand.

The process got off to a smooth start, with special voters making their mark on Monday and Tuesday ahead of the main election day on Wednesday.

Within King Cetshwayo District, 5 013 uMlalazi residents cast their special votes, with 3 456 home visits and 1 557 visiting polling stations.

According to Stella Dlamini, the IEC’s regional manager in King Cetshwayo District, while voting got off to a smooth start, there were some issues with ballot box seals.

“We had a challenge with our seals breaking but area managers were briefed on how to handle them,” she said.

The special voting process was subject to all the security and integrity protocols of normal voting, including scrutiny by party agents and observers where present.

Special votes were reconciled against the voters’ roll and the list of approved special votes.

Additional checks included the use of the double envelope system which allows officials to preserve the secrecy of the voters’ ballots.
