Damaging waves predicted for parts of KZN

High swells are expected to disrupt beachfront and harbours/port activities

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a level two warning for damaging waves for parts of the KZN coastline today and tomorrow.

According to the report, the waves are predicted to disrupt beachfront and harbours/port activities between Port Edward and Richards Bay.

Owing to a surface high, in the country’s south, swells are expected to reach 4.5 to 5.5m from the south coast today and then travel up north to Richards Bay by tomorrow morning but should subside by Tuesday morning.

Possible impacts predicted include localised disruptions of harbours and ports, difficulty in navigation for small vessels which are also at risk of taking on water resulting in it being capsized and damage to coastal infrastructure.

Beachgoers are urged to avoid beachfront activities like swimming or shore/rock angling.

If possible small vessels should opt to remain docked until the swells subside.
