Weather service issues damaging waves warning for KZN coastline
Damaging waves to affect the length of the KZN coastline, impacts could include localised disruptions to ports and harbours
Beach activities should be avoided tomorrow (Friday), and small vessels should refrain from going out to sea.
This was advised by the SA Weather Service (SAWS) this (Thursday) morning as the entity issued a warning for damaging waves to affect the length of the KZN coastline, from Port Edward in the south to Kosi Bay in the north.
The yellow level 2 warning is in place from 8am to 11pm Friday.
“A cold front passes over southern KZN and a surface high is situated southwest of the country. As a result, waves along the KZN coast are expected to reach 4.5 – 6m tomorrow,” said the SAWS.
Impacts could include localised disruptions to ports and harbours; difficulty in navigation for small vessels; small vessels may be at risk of taking on water or capsizing; localised damage to coastal infrastructure, and damage or extensive modification of beaches.
The SAWS warns against beachfront activities like swimming or rock/shore angling, and advises small vessels to refrain from going out to sea.
This weather warning comes on the heels of a tornado that hit the Tongaat region of KZN on Monday as a result of a cut-off low pressure system moving from the Eastern Cape, north to KZN and causing unstable air.
