Test results of recalled Benylin Paediatric Syrup batches finalised
No traces of diethylene glycol in the recalled Benylin Paediatric Syrup batches

Following the recall of two batches of Benylin Paediatric Syrup, South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) has confirmed that it is safe for consumption.
This after the conclusion of an investigation with tests confirming that there is no trace of a toxic substance.

In April, the batches were recalled pending an investigation into health and safety risks.
The recall followed the detection of high levels of diethylene glycol in a batch of the Benylin syrup distributed in various countries, including South Africa. The affected batch numbers are 329304 and 329303.
The authority ascertained on Wednesday that tests did not find traces of diethylene glycol in the recalled batches.
There is also no record of any adverse drug reactions relating to diethylene glycol for the two recalled batches in South Africa or anywhere else where they were exported to, on the continent.
The national regulatory authority for health products however maintained that it implements health product recalls as a crucial measure to address safety concerns or quality issues in the interest of public health.
“We will continue to closely monitor medical products that have the potential of containing unacceptable levels of diethylene glycol. And we will continue to address safety concerns or quality issues so that the health of the public is protected,” said SAHPRA CEO Dr Boitumelo Semete-Makokotlela.
