Zululand K9 ranger tackles Comrades in full combat gear

Taking the plight of rhino poaching to the streets, a K9 ranger based at a Zululand safari lodge tackled the Comrades Marathon last weekend to raise awareness and funds for conservation.

Running in full combat kit and boots, Pierre Barau from Amakhosi Safari Lodge in Mkhuze crossed the finish line in a time of 11:53:01.

“Rhino poaching in KwaZulu-Natal has surged over the past few years, and as a K9 handler who has been at the forefront of the battle, I decided to undertake the ultimate test of endurance by running the Comrades Marathon in full combat kit and boots,” said Pierre.

“My goal was to raise awareness and funds for rhino conservation and our anti-poaching K9 unit.

“Being a ranger is a demanding and often misunderstood role. We patrol vast distances on foot daily, spend weeks away from family and friends, and face the constant threats posed by dangerous animals and poachers. The challenges are immense, but the commitment to protect our wildlife is unwavering.

“By participating in this prestigious race, I hoped to inspire others to take action and contribute to the fight against wildlife crimes. Despite the difficulties, we are always ready to put ourselves in harm’s way to safeguard our precious wildlife.

“Completing the Comrades Marathon in full gear symbolises the resilience and dedication of every ranger out there. Together, we can make a difference.”

The Comrades may be over, but Pierre’s goal to raise funds for conservation never stops.
