Be vigilant when shopping, dating online, warn police
Police urge those who are using online dating sites to avoid sending money to their potential suitors
The rise of internet fraud cases has prompted local police to urge residents to be careful when making online purchases to avoid falling victim to scams.
“People must always confirm the existence of the company they intend to buy from before committing themselves or making any payments,” said King Cetshwayo Cluster police spokesperson Captain Siyanda Shangase.
“They must ensure those cellphones and office landlines are verified and scrutinise email addresses to ensure they are not fake. They must also check the reviews of those companies or suppliers and account numbers to ensure account numbers provided to them indeed belong to the said company,” said Shangase.
Shangase also urged those who are using online dating sites to avoid sending money to their potential suitors for the release of their gifts at customs.
“People must ensure they switch off their international purchase app on the phone banking app. They must refrain from opening any links sent to their cellphones. Sharing an OTP with anyone is a no-go zone,” said Shangase.
