How to cope with end-of-year fatigue?
Many admit they’re not coping as end-of-year fatigue sets in...but don't despair you’re almost at the finish line!
We asked Zululanders how they’re coping with end of year fatigue, and the response was clear: everyone ukhathele – tired!
Locals admit they’re not coping, many guzzling on energy drinks, while a few overachievers suggesting waking up and exercise. But what do the experts have to say about the topic?
1. Health is wealth
Maintain a healthy diet, prioritizing regular exercise and getting enough sleep are essential. Hey – it works! Even a quick 10-minute walk or some cardio like skipping, can improve your mood.
Take Johannes Mosehla, 82 year old completed Comrades this year. If he can do it, you can walk around the block (and don’t make the excuse that he’s had more time to train).
2. Take time off or allow yourself mini-breaks
Are you saving all your time off for the festive season? If you’re feeling like a zombie now, maybe sneak in a day or two off.
If that’s not possible, schedule mini breaks throughout your day.
According to Harvard Health, we can only focus on a task between 10 to 52 minutes. Take short breaks between focused periods of work – snack, stretch, or gaze out the window.
With so many of us starting at screens all day, don’t forget to rest your eyes. The 20-20-20 rule suggest looking at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds every 20 minutes.
3. Get help
If you’ve tried all the tricks and still feel nothing seems to help, reach out for help. Support can come from family, friends, colleagues and professionals.
4. Celebrate
Reflect and celebrate everything that you have achieved this year. You’re almost at the finish line!
