Bad weather halts search for missing pupil

Search for a 14-year-old learner who reportedly drowned at Mtunzini beach

Search and rescue efforts to find the body of a 14-year-old learner who reportedly drowned at Mtunzini beach, was abruptly called off owing to rough seas and harsh weather conditions on Sunday afternoon.

Lwazi Gumede, a grade nine learner from Nogabisela High School in Ncinyane area (ward 17) of uMlalazi Municipality, went missing on Saturday after swimming with friends at Mtunzini beach.

The boy’s mother Philile Gumede, who was present during the search, says she will only find closure once the body of her son is recovered and vowed to return to the beach on Monday morning.

uMlalazI Mayor Queen Xulu has since urged parents to be on the lookout for their children as some have completed their 2024 academic activities and have plenty of free time.
