A major thunderstorm that has hit the Zululand region this (Tuesday) afternoon has caused some damage in Empangeni, Richards Bay and reportedly as far afield as Mtubatuba.

There have been reports of fallen trees, flooded roads and mass power outages. As the Zululand Observer keeps readers abreast of the situation, this is what we know so far:

  • A tree is down and blocking Dunne Road at the high school in Empangeni
  • A tree is down on the R102 between Empangeni and Felixton, blocking the road
  • Power outage affecting Richards Bay is being investigated, with reports of outages in Mtubatuba too
  • Massive storm with lightning, wind and hail reported in Nkandla
  • Drive sensibly on the wet roads. Switch on headlights, reduce speed and increase following distance from the vehicle ahead.
