Wildfire report shows 2024 spike

The 2024 winter fire season reached alarming new heights, surpassing the record of seven years ago.

This was according to a report released on Friday by Working on Fire – Kishugu Joint Venture.

In KZN, the organisation’s firefighters responded to 386 wildland blazes, with 42 850 hectares burnt this year.

The organisation’s provincial communication officer, Nompilo Zondi said this marked a critical moment, underscoring the urgent need for enhanced fire prevention and response strategies.

“This year’s unprecedented surge in wildfires highlights the escalating conditions driven by climate change and other factors that are making wildfires more frequent and severe,” said Zondi.

Climate change remains a primary driver, with warmer temperatures and prolonged drought creating ideal conditions for wildfires.

“Additionally, human activities such as increased land use especially within the urban-wildland interface, outdoor activities in fire-prone areas, and unsafe practices like unattended campfires continue to ignite fires,” said Zondi.

In July, KZN recorded 14 deaths, 25 injured, and more than 100 farmers affected by wildfires.

“In light of this worsening situation, Working on Fire – Kishugu Joint Venture is ramping up efforts in collaboration with partners and stakeholders to manage and contain wildfires.

“Our dedicated team of over 5 300 firefighters, supported by 48 pilots and 18 aircraft support vehicles are ready to mobilise and protect vulnerable communities,” added Zondi.

Recently, Deputy Minister of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment Bernice Swarts called on all South Africans to take responsibility for protecting communities and the environment from wildfires.
