Faction fights in Nongoma claim 10 lives

Following the death of 10 people in Nongoma, political leaders are calling for peace in the area.

Cogta MEC Reverend Thulasizwe Buthelezi called for an end to faction fights between the Onyango and KwaMusi areas, which have disrupted schooling and terrorised communities since July.

Buthelezi, who is also traditional prime minister of the Zulu nation, led a provincial government delegation to meet with the community at KwaMusi sports ground on Monday.

“This meeting marks the beginning of the end of hostilities between Onyango and KwaMusi residents. We must come together as a community to restore peace and ensure the safety and well-being of all residents,” he said.

The meeting was attended by Zululand District Mayor Michael Khumalo, senior members of the Zulu royal family, Nongoma Mayor Clifford Ndabandaba, iziNduna, the king’s regiments, and SAPS Zululand district commissioner Major-General Jabulani Khumalo.

“It is unfortunate that these tensions are taking place in Nongoma where the Zulu king resides. As we speak, 72 learners of Sihlahlasenkosi High School were not able to write their exams on Monday,” he said, conveying condolences to those who have lost loved ones.

Buthelezi emphasised the importance of allowing law enforcement agencies to conduct investigations.

He also committed to working with other departments to host social engagements in December to quell tensions, including a soccer tournament and activities to benefit the elderly.

Mayor of Zululand District, Michael Khumalo welcomed the intervention and challenged leaders to be at the forefront in mitigating the tensions.

“Leaders hold a right and authority to reprimand the citizens and foster peace in the community. These tensions are not only disturbing the social well-being of the communities, but also hinder service delivery,” said Khumalo.
