Planned water shutdown for Empangeni

Water supply to Empangeni and surrounding areas may be interrupted owing to a planned 12-hour shutdown on Tuesday morning until 6pm.

The planned shutdown for uMngeni-uThukela Water to conduct maintenance will affect the whole of Empangeni town and surrounding areas, including Madlebe north and south and Tronox.

There are, however, plans to minimise the impact of the shutdown, with residents urged to use water sparingly.

Mitigating measures include filling the Pearce Crescent reservoir to 100%, while pumping to Magazulu and Hill View will be stopped at 5am to ensure water in the reservoir is saved for gravity feed.

The outlet of the reservoir will be restricted to 50% to prolong supply to the areas receiving water from Pearce Crescent.

Hill View and Lofthym reservoirs will also be filled by Tuesday morning, while some areas within the reticulation will be restricted to prolong water supply to Tronox to avoid furnace shutdown due to water shortage.

Magazulu is currently at 100% and will be feeding all areas in Empangeni throughout the day.

Two water tankers are expected to be provided by uMngeni-uThukela Water to be allocated to the most affected areas.
