6 prisoners, 2 officers escape death in Empangeni crash
Police van transporting awaiting trial prisoners plunges down an embankment in Empangeni
Six awaiting trial prisoners and two police officers escaped critical injury when the vehicle in which they were travelling plunged down an embankment this (Tuesday) morning.
While travelling in a police van on the R34 Main Road towards the Empangeni cemetery from the CBD, the vehicle hit the barrier, veered off the road and went down an embankment.
The officers were transporting the prisoners from Qalakabusha Correctional Facility to eSikhawini Magistrate’s Court.
At the scene, paramedics from Mounties EMS and KwaZulu Private Ambulance treated all eight victims.
Seven suffered serious injuries but were not critical, while one sustained minor injuries.
