IN a bid to revive the culture of reading, the National Education Collaboration Trust (NECT) is hosting a reading revolution this Saturday (9 November) at Empangeni Shopping Centre.

With 150 children’s books to give away, the trust’s representatives will be near Checkers from 9am to 12 noon.

The initiative aims to read with the children while encouraging them to engage in the programme.

“We are focused on ‘reading for meaning’ because of the Progress in International Reading Literacy Study (PIRLS) findings.

“It found that many Grade 4 learners cannot read with comprehension, not only in English but African languages as well,” explained NECT agent Nelisiwe Ntshangase.

“We will be explaining the importance of reading for meaning to the parents and sharing tips on how they can support reading for meaning at home,” she concluded.
