Police urge online vigilance ahead of festive season

Online shopping scams, CIT heists typically increase during festive season, warn police

WHILE bargain shoppers are patiently waiting for Black Friday deals, the police are urging shoppers to be weary of online scams.

SAPS King Cetshwayo Cluster spokesperson Captain Siyanda Shangase warns that the convenience of online shopping can result in consumers becoming more susceptible to fraudulent activity by scammers.

He pleads with the community to follow the ‘SAPS-approved’ guidelines before making purchases:
• Shop only on trusted and secure websites that use a secure form of payment such as a credit card
• Protect your personal information by clearing out any auto-fill forms

With the festive season rapidly approaching, Shangase added that residents need to be vigilant around cash-in-transit (CIT) vehicles as there is a notable increase in CIT heists during this period.

He urges the public to remain on high alert when shopping and to give CIT guards enough space to perform their duties.
