Cards with a magstripe need to be swiped for a card reader to decode the data on its magnetic strip and authorise a payment from the connected account.

There are many alternate payment methods available, including cash payments and contactless debit or credit cards – Europay, MasterCard or Visa cards – that work on a ‘tap and pay’ basis.

There are also contactless payment apps like Apple Google, or Samsung Pay on smart devices.

Additionally, a Trac tag installed in the vehicle allows for automatic payments at all N4 tolls.

The N4 highway runs from Skilpadshek on the Botswana border and goes past Rustenburg, Tshwane, eMalahleni and Mbombela, up to Komatipoort on the Mozambican border.

The road consists of six main toll plazas and four ramp toll plazas – most of which are within South Africa.
