Saturday thunderstorm warning for KZN

Take heed of weather warnings, especially if travelling

While the Zululand region may escape the worst of it, the SA Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a yellow level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms for KwaZulu-Natal.

In place from 10am to 11pm on Saturday, the warning includes isolated showers and thunder showers for western parts of the province, with heavy downpours in central parts of KZN.

“Some of these thunderstorms may become severe and may be accompanied by strong, damaging winds, excessive lightning, hail and heavy downpours in the central and western parts of KZN,” said the SAWS.

Potential impacts include localised damage to infrastructure, settlements, vehicles and livestock; danger to life due to lightning; localised and short-term disruption to municipal and other essential services; localised flooding of susceptible roads, low-lying areas and bridges.

Meanwhile, the NSRI on Friday issued a warning to beachgoers and coastal users to be vigilant during the full moon spring tides over the weekend and into next week.

Residents are urged to keep abreast of weather updates and heed warnings.

Those travelling over the weekend are reminded to do so only if weather permits, to switch on headlights in inclement weather, decrease speed and increase following distance on wet roads.
