Efforts to curb cross-border crime welcomed

Transport MEC Siboniso Duma led a tour to the Jersey barrier wall under construction along the border between South Africa and Mozambique

Amakhosi in uMkhanyakude District have welcomed government efforts to curb cross-border crime between South Africa and Mozambique.

This was revealed on Tuesday during a media tour by Transport MEC Siboniso Duma to the Jersey barrier wall under construction along the border.

Inkosi Mabhudu Tembe and Inkosi Gumede expressed their happiness about efforts to curb the illegal movement of stolen vehicles to Mozambique, a sentiment that was echoed by Duma.

“We are happy with the progress around the construction. About R62-million has been spent on Phase 1 and we are proceeding with Phase 2,” said Duma.

He was accompanied by uMkhanyakude District Mayor Siphile Mdaka and local leadership.

Comprehensive updates about the construction of roads and houses was also provided.

Meanwhile, earlier this month the Lebombo Port of Entry was reopened after being temporarily closed following reports of vehicles being torched on the Mozambican side in post-election riots.

The Border Management Authority said this was to ensure the safety of all cross-border transporters, travellers, traders and officials operating at the port.
