Surge in catches this scary snake season

More than 40-call outs a week for Richards Bay snake catcher as numbers increase amid unpredictable weather conditions

With snake season in full swing, Richards Bay snake catcher Peter ‘Daring’ Daniel has had a busy November, responding to more than 40 call-outs.

While this number might sound high, Peter’s record in his 22 years of catching snakes was in 2022 when he caught 42 in one week.

“The call-outs started picking up about two weeks ago, the minute it started to get a bit hotter,” said Peter.

“With the heat that’s coming, snake numbers are increasing in the early morning and late afternoon. During the heat of the day, they will be looking for shade.”
