Severe thunderstorms expected in Zululand
Lightning, hail, wind and heavy rain are expected in Zululand
Thunderstorms are expected over Zululand this (Tuesday) afternoon after the SA Weather Service (SAWS) issued a level 2 warning for severe thunderstorms.
The warning is effective from today (Tuesday) at 2pm until Wednesday at 10pm with thunderstorms expected over the western parts of KZN today, spreading to the northern parts.
Damaging winds, excessive lightning, hail and heavy downpours are anticipated in some parts of the region.
Potential impacts are damage to infrastructure, settlements, vehicles and livestock; danger due to lightning; short term disruption to municipal essential services and flooding of roads, low-lying areas and bridges.
“Take caution or avoid travelling on bridges and roads in low lying areas, as these may be susceptible to flooding and there may be sinkholes,” warned SAWS.
“Avoid outdoor activities as lighting, hail and flooding may result in injuries and death.
“Stay indoors, shelter pets and cover vehicles. Move livestock and cars to sheltered areas as there may be flying debris,” they added.
Affected municipal areas include Big Five Hlabisa, Jozini, Mandeni, Mthonjaneni, Mtubatuba, Nkandla and Nongoma.
