Automatic migration to ‘ZN’ plates
As of this month, KZN motorists renewing car licences will automatically be given new 'ZN' number
Motorists renewing their vehicle licences as of this month will automatically be changed over to the new ZN number plate.
This as all vehicle owners in the province have until November next year to migrate to the new system.
According to the KZN Department of Transport reads: “The last day for migrating to the new licence plate numbering is 30 November 2025.
“As of 1 December 2024, on renewal of the old KZN licence numbers, the system will automatically replace these numbers with the new KZN licence number.
“This is due to the system being programmed that licence discs issued in December normally expire on 30 November of the following year.
“In this case, motor vehicles being renewed in December 2024 will expire on 30 November 2025, which means this customer will be coming to do the changeover in December 2025 after the date as gazetted to change to the new licence numbering.”

The department said the automatic changeover from this month is to limit the influx of motorists migrating right before the final deadline date.
“Specific licence numbers purchased must be replaced with a free personalised licence number by no later than 30 November 2025 or said number will be forfeited without reimbursement.
“Specific licence numbers purchased and allocated to a motor vehicle currently circulated as stolen by SAPS may apply for a free personalised number.”
The department announced late last year that the migration would be conducted in phases, with the first phase focusing on registering new vehicles, change of ownership, and re-registration of stolen-recovered vehicles.

The second phase began in March for the voluntary migration of all vehicle owners from the existing system to the new one.
Now vehicle owners have a 24-month window to complete this migration.
For many Zululanders, the switch has been a seamless process, while some are still reluctant, with concerns over the added costs.
Business is booming for local licence plate manufacturers and embossers. One business in Richards Bay received around 200 to 300 customers per day in December last year alone.
