WATCH: Richards Bay beach nearly ready for reopening

Around the clock beach rehabilitation this week in preparation for the reopening of Alkantstrand to bathers

Sand replenishment at Alkantstrand has reached its final stages, with dredge spoil being shifted into place today (Friday) to recreate the beach.

Zululand Observer consultant editor Dave Savides captured the work on video this morning.

The dredge spoil was being sculpted to form the beach, with no fewer than five earth-moving machines pushing the mounds into place and making a gradual slope down to the water.

Alkantstrand has been temporarily closed while this beach regeneration project has been taking place, with the planned reopening set for this weekend – in time for festive season holidaymakers.

Bathers have been making use of the neighbouring Newark Beach during the closure.
