Heavy weather warning for parts of Zululand region
SA Weather Service issues level 5 warning for severe thunderstorms for parts of KZN

ZULULANDERS should brace for inclement weather this (Tuesday) afternoon and evening as parts of the region have been placed under alert for severe thunderstorms.
The South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a level 5 warning this morning, which is in place from 3pm to 11pm today.

Inland parts of the region and elsewhere in KwaZulu-Natal appear to be in line for the worst weather, with Nongoma, Nkandla, Pongola and Ulundi on the list of affected municipalities.
“Scattered showers and thunder showers are expected over KZN today, and some of these thunderstorms are expected to become severe over the northern parts,” said SAWS.
“They may be accompanied by large amounts of small hail, damaging winds, excessive lightning and heavy downpours, which may lead to localised impacts.
“Significant amounts of rainfall were observed yesterday, rendering some communities vulnerable.”
Potential impacts include:
• Flooding of settlements which may lead to displacement of affected communities
• Danger to life due, for example, to fast-flowing rivers or streams
• Poor driving conditions
• Flooding of roads and damage to bridges, which may lead to road closures and disruption of traffic flow
The SAWS advised, where possible, residents to stay indoors and off the roads.
“Avoid crossing swollen rivers and streams and, if trapped in floods, leave the vehicle and climb to higher ground,” advised the weather service.
“At home, place valuables above the expected flood level where they will be safe.”
