Zululand runners to finish 2024 on a high

Local runners will gather on 28 December for a 25km or 50km training run

IT’S that time of year again when the dedicated athletes of the Richards Bay-based Igeja Phansi running group hit the streets for their long training run.

Finishing the year on an active note, local runners will gather on 28 December for a 25km or 50km training run in preparation for next year’s races.

Igeja Phansi members who live further afield – some even in other countries – plan their routes of the same distance, forming their own running groups for the day.

The Zululand route will once again be from Mthonjaneni to Ulundi (25km) and Melmoth to Ulundi (50km).

Igeja Phansi runners have just finished their annual 16 Days of Activism running challenge where they complete 5km, 8km, 12km or 16km daily from 1 to 16 December to help raise awareness of the scourge of GBV.

Numerous runners are participating this year, in Zululand, elsewhere in KZN and across South Africa.

About Igeja Phansi

Formed in 2016 by Khumalo, who hails from Ulundi and lives in Richards Bay, Igeja Phansi is not a club but a group of runners based countrywide.

“Igeja Phansi is made up of runners from different clubs and places. We have people from Cape Town, Pietermaritzburg, Johannesburg, Kokstad, Durban, Ulundi, Richards Bay, Mtubatuba and Empangeni, to name a few,” said Khumalo.

“I would like to thank all the runners for taking part in ending violence against all genders. It’s now not only women and children, but men as well. So guys, please speak out and leave the pride aside.”

For more information on registering for the training run, contact Nathi Khumalo on 073 1421086 or Celiwe Msomi on 078 0513851.
