Superb medal haul for Unizulu boxers

University of Zululand boxing team claim third place in national boxing championships

WITH a medal tally of three gold and one bronze, the University of Zululand boxing team finished third overall in a three-day national boxing championships last week.

Running from last Monday to Wednesday, the tournament was organised by University Sport South Africa (USSA) and held at East London’s Orient Theatre.

Unizulu’s boxing coach Skeleton Mngomezulu said, while he sent 10 boxers to the championships, some did not go all the way to the final stages.

“It was an interesting tournament, they all performed very well and showed they have a bright future ahead of them. Out of 12 universities, we took third spot. Siphiwe Sibiya returned with a gold medal after defeating Anathi Nikwe of the University of the Western Cape by a judges’ split decision. They fought in the mini feather weight 48kg division,” said Mngomezulu.

He further explained that their only female boxer, Ayanda Nyathikazi displayed good technique and maturity when she defeated a Durban University of Technology (DUT) candidate also on points decision to bring home a gold medal.

“Our third boxer, Sithembiso Mthembu also returned home with a gold medal after defeating Lethokohle Dlamini from DUT. Both boxers weighed 92kg. And Mpumelelo Ndlovu secured bronze after defeating another DUT opponent,” said Mngomezulu.
