CHRISTMAS on a budget is a reality for many South Africans this year, squeezed for their last cent as the cost of living continues to soar.

With this in mind, here are some DIY, budget-friendly gifts that will surely live up to the proverb ‘it is the thought that counts’, sending a festive and Christmas cheer to you and your loved ones.

Heart-warming Christmas lunch or braai
Yes, groceries have become expensive, with more money spent on far fewer items, but consider a heart-warming inexpensive lunch or braai as a gift for your loved ones, saving you money on presents.

Candles
Get some wax, different colours of food colouring, essential oils, spices and fragrances to make candles to gift to your loved ones.

DIY Christmas cards
Maybe also consider making Christmas cards using printing paper, glitter glue, markers and colourful ribbons, then get creative. You can even cut a potato in half, carve a simple festive image into it, dip it in your food colouring and stamp it on the Christmas card and/or plain paper to use for wrapping.

Christmas clothes
Everybody loves getting new clothes for Christmas, but a tight budget may mean visiting a thrift shop to fulfil that desire for your loved ones.
