Manhunt launched for mother after two babies dumped

Vryheid police feed, bathe and clothe abandoned baby, toddler before taking them to children's home

Vryheid SAPS has registered a case of child neglect and launched a manhunt for a 20-year-old mother of two children.

The two abandoned children were rushed to hospital and later taken to a local children’s home.

According to Zululand Cluster police spokesperson Captain Nkosie Gwala, two women brought the two children – a 2-year-old boy and a 3-month-old girl – to the charge office last Thursday.

These women claimed the children’s mother left them in their care and never returned.

“They said the children’s mother told them she was going to Vryheid to buy groceries. The babies looked exhausted and dirty.

“Police officers took both children to Vryheid Hospital for medical check ups. They also managed to trace the relatives of the mother. The relative refused to accept the children.

“Police officers who were on duty on the day were forced to contribute money to buy clothing and food for these children. They bathed both children and dressed them in new, clean clothing,” said Gwala.
