Four killed in tavern shooting

Police launch manhunt following the shooting of four people at a tavern in Sundumbili

Police have launched a manhunt for at least five suspects believed to be involved in the killing of four people – including two off-duty police officers – leaving another four seriously wounded.

The shooting occurred at a tavern on Ikhwezi Road in Sundumbili on Monday night. It is believed the deceased were enjoying themselves at the tavern when an altercation ensued between one police officer and a group of five men.

According to KZN police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda, the argument was resolved and the constable bought alcohol for the five men.

“A little later on, a scuffle occurred between another police constable with the same five suspects outside the tavern. The constable was shot and reportedly ran back into the tavern with the suspects following him, continuing to shoot randomly at everyone inside the tavern,” said Netshiunda.

He added that three of the people who were shot died at the scene, including one of the two police constables.

“The second police officer was declared dead on arrival at the local clinic,” he said.

“Four more patrons suffered various injuries and were rushed to hospital. Police closed off the tavern and confiscated the liquor after it was established that the establishment was operating illegally.”

Netshiunda added that the motive for the shooting is unknown at this stage.

Police are appealing to anyone who might have information regarding the incident or the whereabouts of the suspects, to call their nearest police station or Crime Stop on 08600 10111.
