King Shaka heritage site to be restored

Government plans to restore KwaBulawayo Royal Palace, the second home of King Shaka Zulu

In its quest to attract tourists to KZN, the government has committed to restoring KwaBulawayo Royal Palace, the second home of King Shaka Zulu.

Sport, Arts and Culture MEC Mntomuhle Khawula was accompanied by uMlalazi Mayor Queen Xulu and King Cetshwayo Mayor Sikhumbuzo Dlamini on Friday to view the historic site.

The restoration forms part of the department’s Operation Siyahlola, which focuses on improved service delivery.

Khawula said he is engaged with various stakeholders, such as the KZN Amafa and Research Institute, which presented its plan to ignite the heritage value of this site which was once a cultural centre.

“KwaBulawayo is an important palace for the Zulu nation. Our visit, together with the KZN Amafa and Research Institute led by Dr Mxolisi Dlamuka and his team, is to inspect this facility to know what needs to be done to revive the palace.

“During our consultation with Dr Dlamuka, it was revealed that work is almost done in preparation to revive the structure of the palace.

“Now the way forward is for all spheres of government to mobilise resources to rebuild and rehabilitate this centre,” he said.
